What is a VFD? It is a microprocessor controlled electronic device that can be programmed to control many machine functions. Of most interest to those who operate a forging hammer are:

1.) It operates as your on/off switch.

2.) You can do a "soft-start" which aids in reducing the load on your hammer's motor during start-up resulting in longer motor life.

3.) It allows you to adjust and control your hammer's BPM (blows-per-minute).

4.) If you only have single-phase input power, it will act as a converter so that you can use the three-phase motor that comes as the standard motor. The three-phase motors are cheaper to run, thereby saving you money.

5.) The VFD controller has a detachable keypad that you can remove so that the hammer can not be operated. This would serve as a safety lock-out so there could not be any unauthorized use of the hammer.
